Geographical Location of Australia

Australia is both a country and a continent, located in the Southern Hemisphere. It is surrounded by three oceans: the Indian Ocean to the west, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and the Southern Ocean to the south. Australia is the only continent that is also a single country. It covers an area of about 7.7 million square kilometers, making it the sixth-largest country in the world. Australia consists of six states and two territories. The country is famous for its unique natural features, ranging from deserts in the central region, known as the “Red Centre”, to lush tropical forests in the north. The Great Barrier Reef, located off the northeastern coast, is the largest coral reef system in the world. Australia also has diverse climatic zones, from tropical regions to arid deserts. The country is renowned for its unique wildlife, including kangaroos, koalas, and numerous endemic species.
INTERESTING FACTS

Australia is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The British monarch is the head of state, represented by a Governor General. The Prime Minister is the head of government.
  • Interesting facts:
Australia became a federation in 1901. It still recognizes the British monarch as the head of state. Aboriginal Australians have lived there for over 65,000 years — one of the world’s oldest cultures.
  • National Symbols
Flag: Includes the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star, and the Southern Cross constellation. Coat of Arms: A shield with symbols of Australian states, supported by a kangaroo and an emu (animals that can’t walk backward — a symbol of progress). Anthem: Advance Australia Fair.
  • CAPITALS
Canberra is the capital of Australia, located in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), between the country’s two largest cities — Sydney and Melbourne. It was purposefully designed to be the capital and was officially established in 1913.
Climate: most of the continent lies in the zone of continental tropical climate, three-quarters of the surface has insufficient moisture. Southeastern trade winds bring heavy precipitation from the Pacific Ocean only to the windward slopes of the mountains of the east.
River network: poorly developed, the only long river on the mainland is the Murray with its tributary Darling. The center of Australia is a huge drainless area where you can often find "creeks" — dry riverbeds that occasionally fill with water.
Lakes: almost all of them are salty and drainless, covered with salt crusts most of the year. During the rainy season, Air North Lake turns into a huge body of water, but in dry years only a few depressions retain water.
